Basic Beauty Tips For Busy Moms
I am excited to guest post and help mommies find easy ways to keep up with the beauty of motherhood. I want to go over some basic beauty tips that I'm sure you have heard about but need a reminder.
When people hear the term 'beauty,' they think of things that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Some women tend to put a lot of pressure on themselves to have perfect hair, perfect skin, perfect teeth, and to keep up with the latest fashion trends. That is not the key; the aim should be to take care of oneself quickly and to realize that any woman can feel beautiful. There are natural ways to try to look your best in a short span of time, but you will need set aside some time for yourself.
Let's start with an essential part of looking good, which is to get our skin to look healthy. Our skin is the foundation for a beautiful complexion (not the little bottle of liquid foundation). You can wear the most expensive, trendiest makeup, but if your skin looks like it's seen better days, no amount of makeup is going to fix it. The basic steps I discuss are the requirements that I set for myself to achieve a brighter, radiant and more clear complexion.
Taking Care of Your Skin
Step 1: Invest
Invest in a simple but good skin care range that includes:
A facial wash
A facial scrub
Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin or acne prone skin, there is a broad range of skin products, to suit everyone's needs. Decide whether you want to use products on the market or go the natural route with home remedies.
Step 2: Routine
Make a habit of using your products every morning when you wake up and every evening before you go to bed. You deserve to have some time to take care of your skin; it will make you feel confident and in turn, more positive about yourself as a mom.
Step 3: Exfoliate
Exfoliate once or twice a week with a facial scrub to get the blood circulating and remove dead skin cells. This will brighten your skin and eliminate the dullness of daily pollution and neglect.
Step 4: Replenish
Drink plenty of water daily. This should be approximately 1 - 2 liters a day. Start with a few glasses each day and increase it until you reach your goal. This has overall health benefits as we know and we need to do it for health.
Step 5: Protect
Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! I cannot stress enough how important this is. Sun damage causes the most common skin problems today. Not using sunscreen can cause wrinkles, pigmentation and sun spots.
Step 6: Remove
Never go to bed without taking off your makeup! The women in my family will probably mention that about me - I never go to sleep without removing my makeup, and tell them to do the same! Wearing makeup and going to sleep is a breeding ground for infection. There are plenty of makeup removing wipes or natural homemade wipes that you can use. Alternatively, a warm washcloth will do just fine.
Choosing the Correct Skincare
Most of us can relate to dealing with skin problems, whether it's acne, blemishes, sun spots or wrinkles. All women are trying to find that miracle cream that fixes everything. Fortunately, I have learned that there isn't one cream that will fix every problem. This can leave you feeling confused and overwhelmed when it comes to choosing skin care products that work. Here are some tips that helped me decide:
Climate is a factor
Most people don't realize how important climate is when considering what skin care products to buy. For example, if you live in sweltering weather conditions, where the sun is intense, most European products will not work for you. Being from South Africa, I have felt that I needed to use South African products or products specifically made for that climate. European products are made for a more cooler climate and didn't seemed to work for me.
Price is not a factor
Another important point to remember is that not all those pricey lotions and potions work as they claim. Sometimes the cheaper products work just as well, if not better. One time I decided to splurge and buy an entire, expensive skin care range. Everyone was talking about how amazing the product was, and the moisturizer was termed the new 'miracle' cream. Unfortunately, I felt the same and not a single miracle happened to my skin. My blemishes did not lighten and all I felt was the guilty feeling of spending too much money on something pretty mediocre.
So What To Do?
I think it is best to try out a few different products, to see what works for you. All products work differently on different people. Do take into consideration your skin type, the sensitivity of your skin and very importantly the climate you live in. I love products that are more natural as they are less harmful to my skin. In the meantime, while you are on the look-out for the right skin care for yourself, here a do-it-yourself face scrub and face mask that can be made right at home. It is recipes that I have tried and has worked well for me.
Easy Facial Scrub
Honey is excellent for just about anything. In our beautiful religion of Islam, honey is the cure for all ailments and was often used by our beloved Prophet (S.A.W). The Quran even mentions that honey is a 'healing for humankind' subhanallah! Here is a face scrub I use that contains honey:
Mix some honey with sugar and a dash of lemon juice
Apply and use as a scrub. This will help with dead skin cells, refine wrinkles and help with redness
Hydrating Face Mask
1 apple/ avocado
2 tbsp cream
1 tsp honey
Wash, peel and grate the apple. Mix with cream and honey. Apply to face and wait 15 mins. Wash off with warm water. This is an excellent mask if you have dry skin and gives you a beautiful glow.
Enhancing Your Natural Beauty
Now that you know how to take care of your skin and choose skin care products, let's see how you can enhance your beauty. I hear mothers say all the time that they don't have a chance to dress up or look presentable. They get so caught up in the day-to-day hustle of being a mom, cook, cleaner, wife... and the list goes on. This is all understandable but is no excuse not to look good for dear hubby.
Yes, we all would love to look like we stepped out of a magazine when he comes home every evening, but realistically we don't have that luxury. So here are some quick, easy and simple make-up steps on how to get you glammed-up in 10 mins before hubby's at the door!
Step 1: Face
Use a tinted moisturizer over the entire face, this will moisturize and hide any blemishes without looking thick and will give you a light glowing look. Use a powder brush and sweep a little powder all over your face to set the makeup.
Step 2: Eyes
Store your eye cream in the fridge and use whenever needed to reduce puffiness around the eye area. Put some mascara on both your upper and lower eyelashes to make your eyes pop. Add some light brown eyeliner on your top eyelid to finish a natural look for your eyes.
Step 3: Cheeks
Add some blush to the apples of your cheeks or use some light-colored lipstick as a blush by gently rubbing in a circular motion on your cheeks with your ring finger.
Step 4: Lips
Apply some tinted lip balm or a little lip gloss or pink lipstick to your lips to complete your look.
Step 5: Hair
If your hair is slightly oily that day and there's no time to wash it, take some baby powder and comb into your roots. This helps eliminate the oiliness and shine and looks like your hair has been washed (smells pretty good too), when you're stressed for time. Make an elegant up style if you wish and you're done!
I know these steps are pretty basic, but I wanted to share some easy steps for a busy mama to follow. I'm sure you've heard this all before, but try to maintain a routine every morning and every evening, and you will see a big difference in your skin within a few weeks, Inshallah. The makeup steps are quick and easy to do, and is a minimal look if you're not used to wearing makeup, or use very little and would like to highlight your natural beauty.
Remember, when you look good and presentable, you feel confident about yourself. As busy mothers, taking time for ourselves is a great thing, because how you feel on the inside directly affects your mood. I hope these tips help make it a little easier for you Inshallah.
AUTHOR FAUZIA - Mom to an active son and daughter under 10. I have always been someone who tries to see the beauty in everything, and I try my best to live a healthy and active lifestyle. My love of helping others and bringing out the best in them is very rewarding. A mommy's beauty and health is often neglected, though not intentionally, so we find it hard to take time for ourselves. When one feels good on the inside, it reflects outwardly. Islam teaches us to live healthy, to be active, and not to overindulge. Our beloved Prophet (SAW) taught us these lessons by his beautiful example. I hope my tips bring out a better, beautiful and more fit mommy in you Insha Allah.
